The spirit of travel

Set off on a discovery of the Annapurna Circuit, an emblematic trek in Nepal that immerses you in the grandiose landscapes of the Himalayas. Between traditional villages with Tibetan architecture, terraced crops, pine forests and flowering rhododendrons, the Manang valley reveals great landscape diversity, dominated by snow-capped peaks. As you hike, green valleys gradually give way to high-altitude plateaus and steep terrain. Encounters with local populations, the discovery of Buddhist monasteries and the crossing of traditional villages invite you to immerse yourself in Himalayan cultures. One of the highlights of this circuit is crossing the Thorong La pass, at 5,416 meters altitude. After this demanding ascent, you discover vast panoramas of the Dhaulagiri, the red ridges of Mustang and the Hindu sanctuaries of Muktinath. Thanks to a progression adapted to acclimatization, this trek in the Annapurnas combines sporting challenge, cultural discovery and authentic encounters. A human and sporting adventure in the heart of the mountains of Nepal.

Beginning of the Annapurnas trek towards Tal and Dharapani

Jagat → Dharapani

6h15 km

Today, you begin your trek around the Annapurna massif. Although the road extends to the valley, its poor condition leads you to continue your itinerary on foot. You take an old hiking trail, away from the road, to reach the village of Tal, whose name means "lake" in Nepali. This village marks the entrance to the Manang region.

After Tal, you cross the river again and continue your hike for approximately 4 km to the village of Dharapani.

Chame, capital of Manang district

Dharapani → Chame

7h15 km

Your hike takes you through the Buddhist village of Bagarchap, whose name means "riverbank". The valley gradually orients towards the west, offering views of the Manaslu behind you, while Annapurna II appears intermittently to the south. You continue your trek in the Annapurnas by taking certain portions of the new road, then crossing pine forests until Chame, the administrative center of the Manang region. You will find several shops, a bank and a school there.

Pisang, a village of Tibetan influence

Chame → Pisang

6h19 km

Today, you continue your trek in the Annapurna massif by crossing the Marsyangdi river several times, in the heart of steep gorges. In places, the path runs along the cliffs and rests on wooden pillars, offering passage close to the mountain terrain. After Buradhan, you begin a climb through a wooded ridge before emerging into a vast valley where the village of Pisang nestles, the next stage of your hiking in the Annapurnas.

Two nights in Manang to acclimatize

Pisang → Manang

5h15 km

Today, two routes are available to reach Manang, in the heart of the Annapurnas massif:

- Via Hongde and Braga: you follow the main trail along the river on its western bank to the village of Hongde, where there is a landing strip. You then cross the river to reach Braga, whose monastery overlooks the village from high cliffs. One final half hour of hiking takes you to Manang.

- Via Gyaru and Ngawal: more physically demanding, this alternative route crosses the villages of Gyaru and Ngawal before reaching Manang. Allow approximately 7 to 8 hours of hiking for this option.

Manang → Ngawal

4h10 km

You gradually gain altitude as you climb the northeast slope of the valley, above the river, to cross the villages of Ghyaru (3 720 m) and Ngawal (3 680 m). The trail then descends back toward the river before rejoining the main route at Braga. More physically demanding, this stage of your trek in the Annapurnas offers beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, a fine reward after the effort of the climb.

Ngawal → Manang

4h9 km

This day is dedicated to acclimatizing to the altitude, with a walk around Manang, a village surrounded by the mountainous landscapes of the Himalaya. You can reach on foot the Gangapurna Lake, located near your hotel, and enjoy its peaceful surroundings. For travelers wishing to extend the hike, a climb to the Chongkor viewpoint is also possible.

The information below concerns travelers who are nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and Canada traveling to Nepal for a tourist stay. Since entry rules may change, we recommend that you verify this information with the official authorities before your departure.

Passport

To enter Nepal, your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months from the date of entry into the country and must have at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn, or altered pages).

Tourist visa

Unlike some destinations, Nepal does not grant visa exemptions to nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and Canada. A tourist visa is mandatory to enter the territory.

This visa can be obtained in two ways:

  • On arrival (visa on arrival): available at the main entry points, notably Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and certain land border crossings. It is strongly recommended to complete the application form online before departure to facilitate procedures on site.

  • Online before departure: via the official online visa system of the Nepalese government (online visa application), allowing you to obtain prior authorization to present upon arrival.

Official rates are as follows:

  • 15 days: 30 USD

  • 30 days: 50 USD

  • 90 days: 125 USD

Payment is generally made in cash (USD, EUR, or other accepted currencies) or by credit card depending on the entry points. It is advisable to have US dollars in cash for payment on site.

The authorities may also request:

  • an exit ticket from the territory (return flight or onward journey),

  • proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay.

Online arrival form

Before your arrival, it is recommended to complete the online arrival form available on the official portal of the Nepalese government. This form allows you to provide immigration authorities with:

  • passport information

  • flight details

  • the address of your first accommodation in Nepal

A digital confirmation or a reference code may be requested when passing through immigration or at the visa issuance counter upon arrival.

Special permits for trekking areas

Certain regions of Nepal require additional permits in addition to the tourist visa:

  • the TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System): mandatory for most trekking itineraries,

  • national park or conservation area permits (e.g., Sagarmatha for Everest, Annapurna Conservation Area),

  • restricted zone permits for certain specific destinations such as Mustang, Dolpo, or Manaslu.

These permits are generally obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara from the relevant offices.

Health and vaccinations

No vaccine is mandatory to enter Nepal, except in case of arrival from a country at risk of yellow fever. However, several vaccinations are strongly recommended by health authorities:

  • hepatitis A and B,

  • typhoid,

  • diphtheria-tetanus-poliomyelitis (DTP),

  • rabies (especially for extended stays or in remote areas),

  • Japanese encephalitis (depending on areas and season).

Preventive antimalarial treatment may be recommended for certain low-altitude regions (Terai). It is advisable to consult a doctor or international vaccination center at least four to six weeks before departure.

Traveling with children

Minors must hold their own valid passport covering the duration of the stay, as well as their own tourist visa.

In certain European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an exit authorization from the territory may be required according to the regulations of the country of residence.

Other nationalities

Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Travelers concerned should inquire with the embassy or consulate of Nepal in their country of residence.
